Make Music Los Angeles

Your Neighborhood. Your Music.

Celebrate MMLA with a Carnival!

MMLA executive board members met with Marie Kellier, president of Caricabela the 15th Annual Los Angeles Carnival to discuss their newly formed collaboration to bring Carnival to LA neighborhoods.

The discussion focused on the work that Marie and the team of instructors, artists and performers have been doing for many years here in Los Angeles with their annual festival and celebrations.

Like MMLA Caricabela Los Angeles Carnival believes there is a tremendous need for the arts in schools.  The Arts and Diversity in Schools program presented by Caricabela is a standard –based arts education program that uses world carnival arts to expose students to traditions and cross cultural experiences not normally found in traditional curriculum.

Caricabela has an initiative that is synergistic with MMLA ‘c core values and it is Carnival Block Party.

Carnival Block Party is designed to bring the art of carnival into neighborhoods using the “block party” concept and utilizing available materials.

Preparing for Carnival is a lot of fun, selecting a theme, making costumes and researching music for the big day is something everyone can enjoy and participate in.  All you need are simple things you have around the house, a little imagination and you are off and running.

Well we would like to see neighborhoods across LA join in celebrating their particular heritage with neighborhood block parties.  Anyone can do it ...bring your neighbors together for a day of free family fun.

We encourage you and your neighbors to start thinking about having a “block party” on June 21st for Make Music Los Angeles.

Just imagine your family, friends and neighbors celebrating MMLA with a carnival that you all put together.  What fun!

By the way you can experience The BIG Carnival on October 14th in Westchester.  MMLA will be represented in the parade as well.  We will have on costumes and headdresses waving to the crowd.  Please make plans to attend the day’s festivities then take your inspiration home, gather your family friends and neighbors contact Marie to bring an expert to the neighborhood to show you how to select a theme, make costumes and headdresses, musical instruments that everyone can play.  Call her at this number (424) 248-4475.

Next all you have to do is register your event on the MMLA website at www.MakeMusicLA.org under Events.  That's all there is to it.

So come out on October 14th with friends and family to the Caricabela 15th Annual Los Angeles Carnival!  See you there--MMLA will be in the parade!
